Chris Brown’s South African Tour Sparks Outrage

The upcoming Chris Brown concerts in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on 14 and 15 December have ignited significant backlash, particularly from activists who are demanding the cancellation of the shows.

Women For Change, a non-profit organisation advocating for the rights of women and children, has launched an online petition urging concert promoters and the South African government to reconsider allowing Brown to perform.

Brown, who gained notoriety for his 2009 assault on then-girlfriend Rihanna, has a long history of violence, including multiple assault charges and allegations of abuse against former partners.

“His concert is scheduled just days after the global commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, making this event a direct insult to the millions of women and girls affected by violence in South Africa and worldwide,” the non-profit organisation stated in its online petition.

While ticket sales have been robust, with the first show selling out quickly, the controversy raises critical questions about glorifying artists with abusive pasts. With an additional date now added, the call for accountability and support for survivors remains at the forefront of the ongoing debate.
